About Haringey

Haringey is a fantastic place to live and work – the world in one borough. A place brimming with creativity, personality, radicalism, and community. It is a place where we stand up for each other. A place that is proudly distinctive. We’ll be celebrating all this and more as the “rebel borough” when we are the 2027 London Borough of Culture.

Our history champions change-makers and everyday rebels; revelling in our differences, battling discrimination, championing equality, and doing things our own way. Haringey’s people are a huge asset, with knowledge, expertise, and passion. Our staff members embody our organisational values: Caring, Creative, Courageous, Collaborative and Community-focused. These values keep us looking forward, ambitious for the future, and continuously striving to do our very best for all our residents.

About the Role

As Director of Placemaking and Community Development, you’ll be the driving force behind our placemaking, community regeneration, and estate renewal projects, acting in line with our ‘Haringey Deal’—a commitment to collaboration and community empowerment.

This is a senior leadership role where you’ll develop and implement innovative strategies that put residents at the heart of our priorities, working with communities to create sustainable, positive change in key areas like Wood Green, Tottenham and other priority neighbourhoods.

Working for Haringey

At Haringey Council we are committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included, and able to be their best at work, and we recognise the benefits of a diverse workforce so welcome applications from all ethnicities and communities so that we continue to make a difference to our residents and community.

Our benefits package includes a leave entitlement up to 31 days + bank holidays, potential hybrid working opportunities, health and wellbeing support, a generous local government pension scheme and a range of discount schemes across leisure and culture that provide both financial and money-saving discounts

About You

You will bring a track record of working with diverse communities to bring forward and successfully deliver large scale placemaking and estate renewal programmes within complex urban areas. You’ll know what it takes to turn ideas into reality – with an instinct for what it takes to make things happen at pace.

You will be passionate about putting these communities at the heart of everything you do. You will have a successful track record of co-designing services and programs with communities and believe in co-creating lasting impact with the people you support.

You’ll be a natural connector, skilled in bringing a wide range of partners and organisations together to deliver in pursuit of positive change.

At Haringey we strive to actively live our values at all times – caring, community focussed, collaborative, creative and courageous. If these resonate with you, then this is your chance to lead projects that will shape the future of our part of London for generations to come.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership: Spearhead our placemaking and regeneration efforts, developing impactful initiatives and partnerships with businesses, statutory agencies, and local communities. You’ll be responsible for delivering timely and financially sustainable projects that address Haringey’s most pressing socio-economic challenges.

Community Centred Approach: Lead community development initiatives that foster active participation, bringing together local organisations, businesses, and residents to co-create solutions that maximise impact in our neighbourhoods.

Inclusive Economy: Drive our inclusive economy strategy, ensuring access to skills, jobs, and business support for local communities. You’ll oversee Haringey Works, Haringey Learns, and other programs that promote economic inclusion and resilience.

Strong Partnerships: Build robust relationships with key stakeholders, from local businesses to the Greater London Authority and the Metropolitan Police. You’ll work closely with partners to shape policies and drive investment that aligns with our shared vision for Haringey’s future.

Operational Excellence: Ensure efficient project governance, budget management, and performance monitoring across the department, with a focus on value for money and robust performance indicators
