The role

As an outreach and class based functional skills tutor at HMP High Down, you will play a crucial role in helping our learners develop their maths & English skills to ensure they can go on to do other work and activities. You will be responsible for delivering engaging and effective lessons both in the education department and in designated rooms on the Prison House Blocks, tailoring your teaching to meet the needs of each individual learner. Your enthusiasm for education and dedication to our learners' success will make you a valuable asset to our team. This is a full-time role, 37 hours per week over 4.5 days. Monday - Thursday 7.45 to16.45 with a 12.45pm finish on a Friday. Out of this, you will be working with a maximum of 12 to 14 learners at any time for 23 to 26 hours. The remaining 11 to 14 hours include administration/preparation time. All planning and marking are done on site within the working hours and there is not a requirement to complete any additional extra-curricular activities apart from within your working day.

The functional skills curriculum area is a small team of six colleagues led by an experienced Hub Manager to support you with your continuous professional development. The team fits within the wider department of three Hub Managers, Local Education Manager and approximately 24 staff.

Responsibilities

Develop and deliver high-quality lessons in class and 1:1 to L1 exam level.
Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and participation.
Assess learner needs and develop individualised learning plans.
Monitor learner progress and provide constructive feedback.
Collaborate with colleagues to ensure the best possible outcomes for all learners.
Stay up to date with curriculum changes and best practices in education.The person

A teaching qualification OR subject specialist qualification at Level 4 (Level 5 - new standards) with a commitment to obtain the relevant outstanding Level 4 (Level 5 - new standards) qualification within a specified time scale (required). However, the right candidate with appropriate experience might be considered if they are committed to completing their teaching qualification within the first year of employment.
Hold at least a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy
Track record of effective teaching in subject specialism
