About the Role:

We are seeking a Primary SEN Functional Skills Tutor with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to work with children in primary education who have Special Educational Needs (SEN). The successful candidate will have experience in delivering Functional Skills programmes and tailored support for children with a range of SEN, ensuring that they make progress in their academic and life skills development.

This role is ideal for an individual passionate about inclusive education and dedicated to supporting students in reaching their full potential. The tutor will be responsible for providing 1:1 or small group teaching that focuses on Functional Skills such as literacy, numeracy, and communication, alongside addressing individual learning needs and barriers to learning.

Key Responsibilities:

* Functional Skills Delivery: Plan and deliver tailored lessons focused on the development of Functional Skills (literacy, numeracy, communication, and basic life skills) in line with the student’s individual learning needs.

* Individualised Learning Plans: Develop personalised learning plans for each student, setting specific academic, social, and functional learning targets.

* SEN Support: Provide targeted interventions for students with a range of SEN, including autism, dyslexia, speech and language difficulties, ADHD, and other learning barriers.

* Differentiation and Adaptation: Adapt lessons and resources to accommodate different learning styles and ensure that students can access the curriculum in a way that suits their individual needs.

* Progress Monitoring: Track and monitor student progress regularly, providing reports on achievements, challenges, and areas for development. Adjust teaching strategies to improve student outcomes.

* Collaboration with Colleagues: Work closely with other teaching staff, SENCOs, teaching assistants, and parents to create a coordinated and holistic approach to each student’s learning and wellbeing.

* Behaviour and Emotional Support: Use positive behaviour management techniques to support students in engaging with their learning, addressing any emotional or behavioural barriers to learning.

* Assessment for Learning: Use a range of formative and summative assessments to monitor students’ progress and inform future lesson planning.

* Supporting Transitions: Support students during transitions (e.g., from primary to secondary school) by ensuring they have the skills and confidence to succeed in their next learning environment.

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

* Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): Essential. You must be a fully qualified teacher with the appropriate level of certification and experience.

* Experience in SEN: At least 1 year of experience working with primary-aged students with Special Educational Needs (e.g., autism, dyslexia, ADHD, speech and language difficulties).

* Functional Skills Teaching: Experience in delivering Functional Skills in literacy, numeracy, and communication, with a focus on practical, real-world learning.

* Knowledge of SEN Provision: Familiarity with different SEN conditions, individualised teaching methods, and how to adapt lesson plans for students with various needs.

* Differentiated Teaching Techniques: Experience in providing a differentiated curriculum to meet the diverse needs of SEN students.

* Effective Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and empathetically with students, parents, and colleagues.

* Commitment to Inclusion: A strong commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment that allows all students to thrive.

Desirable Skills:

* Experience with EHCPs: Familiarity with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and understanding how to implement specific strategies outlined within these plans.

* Knowledge of SEN Frameworks: Understanding of relevant SEN legislation, frameworks, and best practices in supporting students with additional needs.

* Specialist SEN Training: Additional training or certification in SEN (e.g., Makaton, TEACCH, or Behaviour Management strategies).

* Experience with Assistive Technology: Familiarity with assistive technologies and tools that can support students with learning difficulties (e.g., speech-to-text, screen readers).

* First Aid: Paediatric First Aid or any relevant training is desirable but not essential
