Maintenance Technician

Department: Estates Service
Location: Ormskirk or Southport General Hospitals
Working Hours: 40 per week (Start Time - 7am)

Role Summary:

The Maintenance Technician will use their expertise as a specialist technician to provide technical support services for both routine and non-routine fault diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and operation of a wide range of complex building services. These systems are spread across healthcare premises within the Trusts.

Key Duties:

* Installation & Maintenance: Carry out installation, servicing, repairs, and calibration of complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment, building services, and plant following relevant Health Technical Memoranda, water bylaws, British Standards, codes of practice, and legislation.

* Preventative Maintenance: Actively participate in the management and operation of planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schemes.

* Technical Support: Undertake a full range of technician duties using hand tools, power tools, and test equipment.

* Fault Diagnosis & Testing: Conduct fault diagnostics using electronic instruments both on-site and in the workshop.

* Heavy Object Handling: Perform manual handling of items up to 20kg as required.

* Specialised Equipment Maintenance: Clean, decontaminate, diagnose faults, and repair patient-related or specialized equipment.

* Flexible Work Location: Work from multiple bases, as required, to match service demands.

Clinical & Professional Responsibilities:

* Collaboration: Liaise with Trust management, nursing personnel, support teams, statutory bodies, and contractors to provide technical guidance and support.

* Compliance: Follow Trust Procedures and policies, including Health and Safety and Risk Management protocols.

* Risk Assessments: Conduct risk assessments for tasks and ensure compliance with safety standards.

* Specialist Knowledge Sharing: Communicate specialist knowledge to other estates staff when necessary.

* Prioritization: Assess workload priorities and complete tasks accordingly.

Administrative Responsibilities:

* Liaison: Communicate with patients, nursing staff, and other stakeholders to assess and prioritize technical issues.

* Documentation: Record results of equipment testing and provide reports to site management.

* Mobile Communication: Carry a mobile phone (provided by the Trust) to manage duties through the Department’s CAFM system and for general contact.

Teaching & Training Responsibilities:

* Mandatory Training: Undertake necessary training for equipment maintenance and ensure compliance with Trust policies.

* Continual Learning: Update knowledge on new equipment and techniques.

* Training Others: Share knowledge and provide training to other estates personnel as needed.

Line Management/Supervisory Responsibilities:

* On-Call Duties: Participate in the on-call system to handle out-of-hours emergencies across all Trust properties, escalating to senior managers as required.

General Responsibilities:

* Trust Policies: Adhere to all Trust policies, including those related to Health & Safety, confidentiality, data protection, and equal opportunities.

* Professional Conduct: Ensure compliance with the NHS Constitution, Duty of Candour, and safeguarding standards.

* Infection Control: Participate in infection control training and apply these practices in the role.

Qualifications & Experience:

* Apprenticeship: The post holder must have completed a recognised Mechanical/Electrical apprenticeship or equivalent.

* Physical Fitness: The post holder should be physically fit, capable of lifting items up to 20kg and climbing ladders.

* Experience: Relevant experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment.

Other Requirements:

* Flexibility to work across different sites and on-call as needed.

Qualifications:

H.N.C. or equivalent in a relevant discipline

A Mechanical / Electrical Apprenticeship

Relevant experience in a maintenance / building services environment

Logical fault-finding methodology

Computer literate

Ability to react to emergencies

Good telephone / communication skills

Physically fit, able to climb vertical ladders

Ability to communicate with staff at all levels

Willingness to update skills and training

Have excellent analytical skills

Ability to adopt a reasonable attitude to the duties of the post

Driving Licence
