We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Scientific Officer to join our team in our new state-of-the-art genomics laboratory, with a starting salary of £25,000 per annum. Initially this will be a temporary 12-month contract, but there is a possibility that it may be extended and become a permanent position.

At Future Health Biobank we are passionate about protecting the future health of children. Our focus is in two main areas: stem cell banking and genomics.

We are the largest stem cell bank in the UK and have been established for over 20 years. We have recently invested in a newly refitted and equipped Genomics Laboratory based at the Nottingham Science & Technology Park, utilising state-of-the-art automation and next-generation sequencing. This laboratory will host our genomic screening services, serving clinics both in the UK and internationally.

We now have a vacancy for a Scientific Officer to join our genomics team, to take a lead in day-to-day running of the laboratory and to contribute to development of future genomics services. Hours of work will be 37.5hrs which may include weekend and evening work, service depending.

The scientific officer will primarily help to run the non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and dietary screening services, performing sample processing, library preparation and sequencing. They will also perform routine DNA extraction and qPCR-based genotyping.

Key Responsibilities:

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT);

Sample tracking and receipt;

Ensuring correct documentation; follow-up of missing information;

Liaison with client clinics;

Automated and manual DNA extraction and library preparation;

DNA quantitation and quality control;

PCR sequencing and analysis;

Result checking, report generation and distribution;

Technical advice

Qualifications:

A Batchelor’s degree in a scientific subject is essential.

Experience:

It is essential that you have experience of molecular genetics, healthcare science and next generation sequencing (NGS). Ideally you will also have experience of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), variant analysis and qPCR.

As well as the above, we are looking for someone who is able to work as a member of a team, to deliver a timely and accurate service to clients and is also able to display initiative and flexibility. You should also be able to operate under tight time pressures.

37.5 hours per week,

Starting salary of £25,000 per annum,

25 days holiday pro rata (excluding bank holidays),
