The opportunity

Are you ready to take your career to the next level and lead a passionate team shaping the future of construction training? We’re looking for a dynamic and dedicated Senior Trainer – Carpentry and Joinery to join our thriving Apprenticeships department. This is your chance to inspire the next generation of skilled professionals while driving excellence across our apprenticeship programmes.

In this exciting role, you’ll lead a small team of trainers, ensuring the delivery of outstanding carpentry and joinery apprenticeship programmes at Levels 2 and 3. Working closely with the Apprenticeship Manager, employers, and learners, you’ll make sure our curriculum meets the needs of the industry and supports apprentices in achieving their career goals. With your leadership, you’ll empower your team to deliver top-tier training that helps learners shine.

Alongside your leadership duties, you’ll maintain a reduced caseload of apprentices, providing expert mentoring and personalised support. Your collaboration with employers will ensure apprentices thrive in their workplace and exceed expectations in their end-point assessments.

From leading teaching sessions to delivering constructive feedback, you’ll play an important role in every step of the learning journey. You’ll work hand in hand with the Quality Team and Teaching and Learning Coaches to make sure our teaching, learning, and assessment standards are second to none. Plus, you’ll drive quality and consistency by developing and leading robust standardisation processes.

Your impact doesn’t stop with apprentices. You’ll also mentor and support your team, guiding them through appraisals, performance reviews, and professional development opportunities. With your drive for continuous improvement, you’ll help everyone stay ahead in their field, ensuring trainers and apprentices alike are ready to succeed.

Based in our cutting-edge Construction facility, you’ll have access to inspiring workspaces and industry-standard equipment that bring learning to life. This is your opportunity to combine your expertise in carpentry and joinery with your passion for leading others, creating an environment where learners and trainers can excel.

If you’re looking for a role where you can make a real difference, shape the future of construction training, and work with an incredible team, we’d love to hear from you. Join Barnsley College and help us inspire the next generation of construction professionals!

About you

You’ll have a strong background in the trade, ideally holding a recognised qualification in Carpentry and Joinery at Level 3 or above. Your hands-on industry expertise will form the foundation for inspiring the next generation of construction professionals.

Teaching and training will be at the heart of what you do, so a teaching qualification such as a PGCE or Cert Ed, or a willingness to work towards one, is essential.

While an assessor and teaching qualification is advantageous, we offer staff development in these areas, so candidates that do not have these qualifications must be willing to work towards achieving them.

You’ll also bring experience in delivering high-quality training and supporting learners to achieve their full potential. A solid understanding of apprenticeship standards and end-point assessment processes will help you thrive in this role.

You should also have strong leadership skills as you will manage and support a small team of trainers, helping them deliver outstanding results. Whether conducting assessments, leading appraisals, or fostering a culture of continuous improvement, you’ll be confident in motivating others to succeed. Strong organisational skills are key, enabling you to manage caseloads, monitor learner progress, and maintain high standards across the provision.

We’re looking for someone who is proactive, adaptable, and an excellent communicator. You’ll enjoy working collaboratively with employers, colleagues, and learners, building positive relationships to meet shared goals. Your passion for teaching and developing others will be matched by your ability to stay organised and focused in a busy environment.

If you also hold assessor or verifier qualifications, have experience in the Further Education sector, or are familiar with Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), that’s an added bonus. Most importantly, you’ll have the drive and enthusiasm to make a real difference in the lives of our learners and the success of our Apprenticeships department.

Below is a list of some of the key skills, qualifications and experience we are seeking for this exciting opportunity.
