About this client/child: Meet Thomas, a joyful 12-year-old who thrives on outdoor adventures, swimming, and spending time with people. He’s a fan of animals, especially visits to garden centres and pet shops, and anything that brings laughter. Loud noises, like shouting and motorbikes, can be overwhelming for him. Thomas has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and is fully dependent on support for his care needs. He is non-verbal and communicates through facial expressions and low-tech eye gaze communication. Thomas is PEG fed but can eat some solid foods orally. He also manages epilepsy with medication. His family home has been specially adapted to include a ceiling track hoist, lift, and a custom-designed bathroom.
Overview of role: Thomas attends a local specialist school, where your role as his SEN Support Worker / Teaching Assistant (TA) you will be central to his learning, participation, and enjoyment of school life. Your focus will include enhancing his communication skills, supporting his physical health, and helping him reach his potential. You’ll work closely with a therapy team, including a physiotherapist and a Speech and Language Therapist, to provide consistent, holistic support. Twice a week, you’ll support Thomas at home after school, assisting with his rehabilitation plan, daily activities, and some household duties like meal preparation. Additionally, the family travels to Spain for Thomas' specific therapy sessions, and you may have the chance to join if you’re interested. The hourly rate being offered is £16.00 to £18.00 DOE.
Who this job would suit: This role is ideal for a motivated and positive individual who brings creativity and a sense of fun to their work. While experience with physical disabilities and a school environment is advantageous, a strong willingness to learn and grow in the role is equally valued. Full training and support will be provided to help you succeed with Thomas’s specific needs.
What’s great about this job: This rewarding role allows you to play a meaningful part in Thomas’s journey, supporting his development and independence. Working closely with a dedicated team, you’ll help ensure a consistent and nurturing care approach while developing valuable skills.
