Salary: £42,900
Primary Purpose of the Role:
The Assistant Head of Department supports the Head of Department in managing and enhancing the curriculum for Study Programmes, Apprenticeships, and adult courses in Electrical Installations. The role includes overseeing staff and resources across multiple campuses and driving high standards to ensure excellent outcomes for both staff and students.
Key Responsibilities
1. Study Programmes
Provide day-to-day support for the Electrical Installations team.
Assist with timetabling courses, ensuring a student-centred approach.
Chair and document course team meetings.
Develop and implement a teaching support cover rota for the department.
Embed English and Maths into the curriculum and ensure their integration throughout all study programmes.
Monitor attendance, punctuality, and behaviour, acting in line with college policies.
Foster an outstanding student experience with excellent outcomes and progression opportunities.
Build industry contacts to ensure the curriculum remains current and provides work experience opportunities.
Collaborate with the MIS team to ensure accurate timetabling of flexible study programmes.
Assist in recruiting and admitting new learners and participate in promotional events.
2. Quality Assurance
Lead quality assurance activities to engage staff with college processes and meet performance targets.
Use Quality Improvement data to drive measurable improvements.
Support staff in delivering teaching and assessments that align with college and awarding body requirements.
Develop inclusive teaching practices and collaborate with the Excellence Coach team to enhance delivery.
Ensure adjustments in assessment practices to promote inclusivity while meeting awarding body criteria.
Advance equality and equal outcomes in learner recruitment and achievements.
Share best practices across departments to ensure consistency of standards.
3. Management and Resourcing
Supervise and manage team members through regular one-to-one meetings and performance appraisals.
Support the recruitment, induction, and development of staff.
Ensure efficient resource allocation, including rooms and equipment.
Oversee department Health and Safety compliance, including accurate risk assessments.
4. Professional Development and Industrial Links
Develop relationships with industry professionals to keep the curriculum current.
Engage in personal research and professional practice in your specialist area.
Collaborate with internal and external professionals to implement intervention strategies for diverse learning needs.
Identify and address training needs within the department and across the college.
5. Other Accountabilities
Maintain professional standards and promote equality and diversity.
Adhere to college policies on safeguarding, health and safety, and data protection.
Undertake additional duties as required, commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the role.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
Certificate in Education, PGCE, or equivalent teaching qualification (or willingness to obtain).
Relevant vocational qualifications in Electrical Installations.
Desirable:
Leadership or management qualifications.
Experience
Essential:
Proven teaching and/or leadership experience in Electrical Installations or a related field.
Experience in curriculum development and quality assurance processes.
Desirable:
Industry experience in Electrical Installations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Essential:
Strong organizational and management skills.
Ability to inspire and motivate staff and students.
Proficiency in developing industry-aligned curricula.
Desirable:
Familiarity with further education regulatory frameworks.
