As a Border Force Assistant Officer, you’ll have a purpose-filled role, working for supportive employer and in a great team.

About us

Border Force is a law enforcement arm of the Home Office. We are responsible for managing the UK border control by implementing immigration and customs regulations and working with the wider Home Office on counter terrorism, tackling organised crime, modern slavery and trafficking.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a team that works together to protect and enhance the UK economy. Our work is varied and rewarding, with an inclusive culture, attracting people from different backgrounds with different identities, perspectives and lived experiences.

There’s also the chance to build a future in a culture where you can be yourself and benefit from our outstanding learning and career development. We encourage applications from candidates who wish to work part-time and will consider those subject to business need.

About the role

As a Border Force Assistant Officer, you’ll be at the frontline of our operations, where your contributions will have a direct impact on society. You will deliver what the public expects from us.

If you’re looking for an ever-evolving role, you’ll make a great Border Force Assistant Officer. Our work can be challenging but there will always be someone on hand to support you. You will be working with and alongside experienced colleagues.

The part you play will be a fundamental aspect in how we maintain the security of the UK Border. So, what will you be doing if you choose to join us?

Our aim is to enable the flow of passengers and goods quickly and effectively through the Primary Control entry points, while refusing entry to the UK when appropriate and required. This means checking passengers to ensure our legal duties around Customs, Freight, Immigration and Safeguarding are always upheld.

As a Border Force Assistant Officer, you could be conducting checks on our systems one day, and performing searches on people, goods, and vehicles the next. Whatever the task, you’ll use law enforcement powers when necessary. You’ll also tackle international trade work, investigating errors and complaints.

About you

To join us, you will need:

To be professional, impartial, honest and respectful of others

Demonstrable interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with others including colleagues, members of the public and external stakeholders.

A genuine interest in people, and an inquisitive, empathetic manner.

The ability to work as part of a team, be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.

The ability to deal with potentially difficult and challenging situations in a professional manner.

An objective, analytical and methodical approach to tasks.

Training and development

Join us, and you will receive the training and support that you need, including training on the job. Your mentor will support you until you are fully confident in the role. Even then you are never alone; there is always a colleague around for advice and support.

And don’t forget that our training can take you far beyond this role. Further information on what the training involves can be found

Your initial training will last around five to eight weeks. This includes an induction, core training and Public and Personal Safety Training (PPST).

Travel and accommodation costs for training will be paid by Border Force where required.
