We are seeking a passionate and dedicated SEN Education Mentor to join our team at an alternative provision in Wokingham. This provision caters to children and young people aged 5-19 with a variety of additional needs, including Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The role involves providing high-quality, person-centered support that promotes the physical, emotional, and educational development of children with complex needs.
You will play a vital role in supporting our students in their learning, both in small groups and on a one-to-one basis, helping them achieve their potential in a safe and nurturing environment. We pride ourselves on delivering therapeutic interventions and holistic care that focuses on the individual needs of each student.
Key Responsibilities:
* Work with children and young people aged 5-19 with various additional needs, including PMLD, SEND, ASD, and associated behavioral challenges.
* Provide personal care and support for students with PMLD, including feeding, toileting.
* Assist with the preparation and delivery of engaging and differentiated learning activities, ensuring they are accessible to all students.
* Work 1:1 or in small groups to deliver interventions, therapies, and learning activities as outlined in the student’s EHCP (Education, Health, and Care Plan).
* Foster a safe, supportive, and structured environment where all students feel valued and supported.
* Help students develop communication, social, and life skills using strategies and tools such as Makaton, PECS, or other assistive technology (training provided if necessary).
* Provide emotional and behavioral support to students, implementing agreed behavior management strategies.
* Collaborate closely with teachers, SENCO, therapists, and external agencies to ensure the best possible outcomes for students.
* Attend and contribute to meetings regarding student progress and welfare, keeping accurate records and monitoring their individual development.
* Act as a positive role model and develop strong, trusting relationships with students and their families.
Essential Requirements:
* Experience working with children or young people with additional needs, particularly PMLD, SEND, and ASD.
* Ability to demonstrate patience, empathy, and resilience when supporting children with challenging behavior or complex needs.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with students, staff, and parents/carers.
* Flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to undertake training in specialist areas (e.g., behavior management, communication strategies, personal care).
* Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications:
* Previous experience in a similar SEN support role, particularly in an alternative provision or specialist school setting.
* Relevant qualifications such as CACHE Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or equivalent.
* Experience with Makaton, PECS, or other alternative communication methods.
* A solid understanding of EHCPs and how they guide the learning and support of students with additional needs.
