Due to ongoing growth, our client is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Trainee/Apprentice Quantity Surveyor to join our growing team in Stockton. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for construction and cost management to develop their skills in a dynamic environment. You will be supported in gaining valuable experience across all areas of the business working with the commercial team who will support your development and training.
As a Subcontractor Trainee Quantity Surveyor, the key responsibilities typically revolve around assisting in managing the costs and financial aspects of construction projects, particularly related to subcontractors. Here are some of the main duties:
1. Cost Estimating and Budgeting:
Assisting the estimating team in preparing initial cost estimates for subcontractor work.
Helping to create detailed budgets for specific construction projects.
Supporting the review and tenders for submission to clients.
2. Contract Administration:
Assisting in reviewing and managing client agreements and contracts.
Supporting and reviewing variations and claims for extra costs to clients.
Ensuring that work complies with contractual terms, timelines, and quality standards.
3. Measurement and Valuation:
Taking site measurements and calculating quantities of materials, labor, and resources required.
Assisting with the valuation of completed work and ensuring accurate invoicing to clients.
4. Cost Control and Reporting:
Tracking and monitoring costs throughout the project.
Supporting the preparation of cost reports to help identify cost overruns or savings.
Analyzing financial data and assisting in forecasting future costs.
5. Risk Management:
Identifying and helping to mitigate financial risks related to subcontractor activities.
Assisting in the management of any cost-related disputes or claims from clients.
6. Site Visits and Assessments:
Participating in site visits to monitor progress and performance.
Conducting inspections of completed works and verifying the accuracy of quantities and quality.
7. Communication and Coordination:
Liaising between the main company and clients to ensure smooth workflow and address any issues.
Helping to prepare and maintain communication channels for all cost-related matters.
8. Documentation and Record Keeping:
Assisting in maintaining proper records of payments, invoices, and variations.
Ensuring accurate documentation of all financial transactions related to works.
9. Supporting Negotiations:
Assisting senior commercial team in negotiating with clients to agree on fair pricing and terms.
Supporting the preparation of final accounts for completed work.
10. Learning and Development:
Gaining practical experience in cost management, measurement, and relationship management.
Attending training sessions or workshops to develop skills in quantity surveying, cost management software, and legal requirements in the construction industry.
What We Need from You:
IT Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn bespoke software packages.
Quantity Surveying Skills: Ability to assist in preparing Bills of Quantities, schedules of works, and valuations.
Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with internal teams, subcontractors, and clients.
Teamwork & Initiative: Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. You should be proactive, with a methodical approach to problem-solving.
Meeting Participation: Attend meetings, take minutes, and contribute to discussions, ensuring all actions are followed up.
Attention to Detail: Accurate measurement and documentation skills are essential, particularly for re-measurement tasks and processing payments.
What You'll Need:
Qualifications: A degree or HNC in Quantity Surveying, or working towards one (desirable)
Experience: Some experience in a Quantity Surveying or Estimating role is desirable but not essential. Fresh graduates are welcome to apply.
Approach: A strong willingness to learn and develop your skills in a fast-paced environment.
Work Ethic: Ability to work well under pressure, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines.
Communication: Clear, concise communication skills, both written and spoken.
