A successful 'Mechanical Engineer' should have:

A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field would be beneficial
Proven experience in a Mechanical Engineer role is a must
Knowledge of mechanical systems, rotating equipment or gas turbines would be beneficial however not essential.
Excellent problem-solving abilities.
