Location: North London (Greater London)
Pay Rate: £32.19 per hour (PAYE)
Hours: 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
Start Date: Immediate

Job Purpose

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Planning Officer to join its Development Management team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the assessment and management of a range of planning applications, including major developments. This role involves providing professional advice, conducting site visits, and ensuring development proposals are in line with planning legislation and council policies.

Key Responsibilities

*

Assess all types of planning and associated applications, including site visits (typically unaccompanied), public consultation, negotiation, and preparation of written reports and recommendations within agreed timeframes.

*

Manage and provide professional input on major development proposals from pre-application through to determination.

*

Represent the Council at planning appeals, including the preparation of statements and attendance at Informal Hearings and Public Inquiries.

*

Provide clear and professional pre-application planning advice to prospective applicants and developers.

*

Respond to planning enquiries from agents, applicants, members of the public, and internal/external stakeholders.

*

Liaise with local societies, resident associations, and community groups on planning matters, including attendance at meetings where required.

*

Handle correspondence related to development control, including responses to letters from Members of Parliament (MPs) and Councillors.

*

Negotiate Section 106 (S106) Agreements under the Town and Country Planning Act to secure community benefits and mitigate the impacts of development proposals.

*

Serve as Duty Planning Officer on a rota basis, providing front-line planning advice and guidance.

*

Attend Planning Committee meetings, preparing and presenting planning reports as required.

Candidate Requirements

*

Degree or equivalent qualification in Town Planning or related discipline.

*

Eligible for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) (preferred but not essential).

*

Proven experience in development management, ideally within a local authority setting.

*

Strong knowledge of UK planning legislation, policy frameworks, and development control processes.

*

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce high-quality reports and deliver presentations to committee.

*

Strong negotiation, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.

*

Ability to manage a varied caseload effectively and work to tight deadlines.

Additional Information

Immediate start required.

*

This is a temporary assignment with potential for extension based on performance and service needs.

*

The role requires both office-based and remote working, with site visits across the borough.
