Transport Manager (Planning/Compliance)

Hutchinson Engineering Services Ltd is a Company involved in a varied range of activities, including haulage from the small to the large abnormal loads. Have a look at our digital presence to see a taster of what we do, we are on the web, Facebook, Instagram & Linked-In.

We are looking to add to our team in the Transport Department. In return the correct candidate will receive a competitive salary (dependant on experience £40K+); life insurance, at 2½ times the salary; Company contributions to a pension (while ever you contribute); 20 days holidays per year, increasing by one day per year in years 6 to 10, to 25 days, plus eight statutory bank holidays; the opportunity for regular health assessments; entitlement to Company sick pay after two years employment.

The office is open from 7AM to 6PM Monday to Friday, with a shared rota of early and later start/finishes (7-5 or 8-6) and Saturday 7AM to Noon covered by one person, shared between the team.

In day-to-day operations, you will be part of the team:

* Managing our drivers, matching their vehicles and trailers to the incoming work, planning collections and deliveries to work as efficiently as possible.

* Drivers will need clear and timely instructions on where the collection is to be made, what they are to move and where it is being delivered to, by when. They are part of the team, and it will be your role to ensure they feel that to get the best from them.

* Because of the varied nature of the work, we have a range of modern trucks and trailers, so you will use your knowledge to identify the best fit for the job but be flexible enough to be able to shuffle work and schedules as live issues mean this can, and frequently does, change.

* Monitoring driver performance using vehicle telematics and desktop software, ensuring defect recording, driving standards, including driving & working time regulations are maintained.

* You must be able to address issues, with the individuals, where they fall short.

* Overseeing the legal requirements of operating the vehicles and co-ordinating with our workshop.

* You will ensure vehicle related incidents are investigated and are documented, so that lessons can be learned, insurance can be informed and where necessary drivers can be spoken to about conduct.

* The Company is FORS registered and has GOLD accreditation, which means monitoring and reporting vehicle and driver performance within the Standard set by them. (The Standard is reviewed bi-annually.)

* A big part of the role is to ensure the requirements of FORS is met, and their standards are applied as you may lead or contribute to the FORS or customer audits.

* Training of both drivers and managers is central to what we do. So, you may create & deliver toolbox talks, draft memos, schedule driver e-learning, while at the same time continuing your own professional development as a Transport Manager, in order to keep up to date with industry developments and changes.

* You will appreciate that there will be other elements of the job, which cannot be listed; some are small, and some may develop over time. It will be up to you to identify those that can be delegated and those that require your involvement.

But, of course, it all starts with the customer. You will deal with them on the phone, via email and in person, managing enquiries, making sure you have all the necessary details, quoting for jobs and finally managing the planning & scheduling their load or loads. By building relationships with customers, you will promote the business.

To be successful in this role we would like you to have:

* Reasonable IT skills, with good knowledge of the road network

* Excellent communication skills

* The ability to organise the workload

* Be able to work as part of a team

* A minimum of three years prior experience in a transport office

The following would also be an advantage, but are not essential:

* A Transport Manager’s International CPC in Road Haulage

* A class 1 (CE) driving licence

* Experience and knowledge of abnormal loads

* Knowledge of some or all of the following AbHaulier, Webfleet, Fleetcheck & FORS
