A handyman plays a very important role in ensuring that all the hostel issues within our Greenwich/ Bexley properties are resolved and that the day-to-day operations of the hostels run smoothly. They are responsible for ensuring that all the maintenance work is completed.
The main role is to upkeep all the hostels and, sometimes, the land outside the building by monitoring building conditions and making suggestions for repair and improvements that make the workspace more comfortable and well-lit for our clients. There may also be daily administrative duties related to paperwork to manage and oversee.
Duties and responsibilities
Skills:
* Be able to multitask and prioritise
* Efficiently communicate both verbally and in written form
* Be able to coordinate with other departments
* Have good judgment and decision making skills
Responsibilities:
* Carpentry
* Plumbing
* Electrical – i.e. washing machines, sockets, fridges
* Painting/ decorating skills
* Basic repairs + Ordering and replacing locks
* Monitoring cleanliness of hostels
* Working closely with maintenance manager and head of operations manager
* Moving clients from hostel to hostel (removals)
* Assisting with delivery of furniture, equipment and supplies/ Requisitioning orders for new furniture supplies
* Sometimes called on to move and remove items from hostel to hostel
* Help to store unused furniture into storage (Lifting skills)
* Responsible for the management of supplies, equipment, furniture and other physical materials
* The manager is actively involved in the planning and provisioning of materials and equipment for use, storage and ultimately for disposal
* Materials managers may also be involved with the inventory control and will provide administrative support
* Performs daily inspections of the building for items that may need cleaning and repairs
Experience:
* Maintenance (handyman) must have at least 3 years of successful working experience in maintenance
* Experience of working with customers internally and externally
* Experience/ awareness of health and safety requirements including lone working
* Experience of work with vulnerable individuals
* Ability to communicate in more than one language
* Knowledge and experience of QAF Standards and Supporting
