Graduate Teaching Assistant - Pathway to Teaching in Specialist Autism Setting

This Graduate Teaching Assistant role in Hemel Hempstead offers a unique two-year pathway in a specialist autism setting, with structured support to progress you from Teaching Assistant to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through a teaching apprenticeship.
Position: Graduate Teaching Assistant
Location: Hemel Hempstead
Hours: Full time, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Salary: £20,000 - £24,000 per annum, dependent on experience
Contract: Permanent post (hired through Academics agency)
About the Role:
This role is ideal for graduates eager to pursue a career in SEN teaching. You will begin as a Teaching Assistant, gaining hands-on experience and understanding our holistic approach to autism education. Over year one, you'll support students in class as a TA/tutor, gradually taking on teaching responsibilities. By year two, you'll work as an unqualified teacher and enroll in a teaching apprenticeship with a university partner (currently Buckinghamshire's online course) to achieve QTS by September 2026.
Development Pathway:
Year 1:Support as a TA/tutor while beginning to take on teaching responsibilities part-time
Year 2:Full unqualified teaching role alongside enrolment in a teacher apprenticeship to gain QTS
Individualized support and training from a skilled team throughout the progressionKey Requirements:
Must hold a degree; an education-related subject is preferred
Demonstrated interest in Special Educational Needs (SEN) and a commitment to pursuing teaching
Comfortable with behaviour management strategies and open to physical intervention when necessaryAbout the Setting:
Our school specializes in supporting students with autism and complex educational needs, providing therapeutic behavioural support. The team includes experts in Occupational Therapy Speech and Language Therapy and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) support, allowing for holistic student care. Due to some complex behaviours, comfort with high-level behaviour management is essential.
