Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant

About the Role:

We are seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join our team at a Pupil Referral Unit in Hertfordshire. This role involves supporting students who have been excluded from mainstream education due to emotional, social, and behavioral difficulties. Many of our students come from challenging and disadvantaged backgrounds, and we are looking for a candidate who understands their unique needs and is passionate about making a positive impact on their lives.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide one-to-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs, helping them engage with the curriculum and manage their behavior effectively.
Work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and external agencies to create a supportive, nurturing environment for students.
Assist in the development and implementation of individualized education plans (IEPs) tailored to meet the specific needs of each student.
Build strong relationships with students to encourage trust, respect, and positive behavior.
Support students in developing resilience, social skills, and emotional regulation techniques.
Contribute to the planning and delivery of interventions aimed at improving social, emotional, and academic outcomes for students.
Promote an inclusive learning environment where students feel valued and empowered to succeed.

Person Specification:

Resilience: A strong capacity to remain calm and focused in the face of challenging behavior, with the ability to handle difficult situations with patience and empathy.
Understanding: A deep understanding of the difficulties faced by students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including trauma, abuse, and neglect.
Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build positive relationships with students, staff, and external stakeholders.
Experience: Previous experience working with children with SEMH needs, particularly in a PRU, special school, or alternative provision setting, is highly desirable.
Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members, including teachers, support staff, and multi-agency teams.
Commitment: A genuine passion for working with vulnerable young people and a commitment to helping them achieve their potential.
Flexibility: A willingness to adapt to the varying needs of students and the challenges of working in a dynamic educational setting.

Requirements:

Previous experience in an SEMH or related role (preferably in a PRU or special education setting).
A relevant qualification in education, child development, or social work is desirable.
Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to undergo one).
