Senior Linux Engineer
£55,000 with excellent benefits
Hybrid with 1 day/week in the Bristol office
Our large, prestigious client is seeking a Senior End-User Computing Engineer with a focus on Linux systems. As part of the End-User Computing team within the IT Operations' Infrastructure area, this role involves managing endpoint infrastructure services that support approximately 18,000 devices across the organisation.
The successful candidate will lead the technical services supporting Linux end-user devices for both staff and students, ensuring these systems meet the diverse needs of the organisation.
This position requires expertise in Linux and relevant management solutions, high-level technical leadership, and a strong ability to align service delivery with the institution's broader objectives.
What will you be doing?
Take technical responsibility for the set of services provided by the team, supporting the Team Manager in the operational management of these services.
Provide senior technical expertise for the team’s operational support functions handling incidents, problems, service and change requests, in accordance with ITIL best practice.
Work with the Team Manager and service stakeholders to manage the complete service lifecycle and, as part of the team, be responsible for the delivery of its portfolio to the organisation including liaison with external suppliers for technical contact as required.
Use senior technical expertise to take a lead on continuous improvement activities, and the design, development, and implementation of longer-term strategic changes to services within the team’s portfolio.
Work with members of the team, and of other IT teams, providing leadership in the undertaking operational technical support tasks.
Create and own all technical and operational documentation for areas of technical specialism.
Influence the development of solution or change proposals by contributing and evaluating technical options, constraints, and complexity, often working with both academic and professional service colleagues.
Ideally you should have:
Experience of supporting services and infrastructures related to end-user computing services
Demonstrable in depth expertise in the technical aspects of the named service
Demonstrable in depth experience in using appropriate platforms/scripting languages/application development tools
Demonstrable experience of systems administration and configuration
Strong problem-solving and planning and organising skills
Degree level qualification in a relevant subject, or equivalent experience and training,
Good interpersonal skills, capable of forming excellent long-term working relationships with colleagues
Demonstrable experience of undertaking projects in a technical environment
Able to demonstrate diplomacy, persuasiveness and negotiating skills to maintain relationships with third party providers achieving successful resolution to issues arising
Extensive knowledge of end user computing technologies and device management.
Strong knowledge of Linux, Microsoft windows and MacOS operating systems.
Experience using technologies such as SCCM, Intune, JAMF, Puppet, Satellite and Landscape management platforms.
Knowledge of end user device security and associated technologies such as Antivirus and firewalls.
Experience of PowerShell.
Experience of Agile practices (e.g. Scrum, Kanban)
