The apprentice will undergo extensive training at college and on the Gardner site in order to achieve a minimum of NVQ Level 3 qualification within an agreed timescale.

As a fab/weld apprentice, the apprentice will be taught the practical and theoretical skills associated with fabrication and welding. They will learn many subjects including basic bench fitting/hand tool skills, workshop safety, measuring and marking out, engineering drawing, different welding techniques including MIG, TIG and MMA, flame cutting, forming and rolling steel plate and sheet metal work.

The welder fabricator uses a variety of methods to produce a product for the customer. At one end of the spectrum is detailed drawing, which will cover all aspects of a build, at the other end is a sketch of the end product, produced by the customer. It is the welder’s job to be able to interpret both and produce the product that the customer requires.

Knowledge and Experience:

* Technical, practical and mathematical skills

* Good hearing and vision, as well as hand-eye coordination with attention to detail and accuracy

* Possession of good verbal and written communications skills

* Be a patient person and capable of applying safety practices

* Be able to work individually and in a team

* Physical health and fitness is important as the job requires more physical energy than other jobs

* Have a keen interest in a manufacturing/engineering environment

* Ability to maintain a high level of discretion and ciHHIGH onfidentiality

* The ability to read engineering drawings

* An understanding of the properties of materials

* The ability to work to a high degree of accuracy

* The ability to picture how a finished product will look

Person Specification:

Four or five GCSEs (grade 4 or above) including math’s, English, science, engineering, design and technology, or equivalent qualifications.

Alternatively:

* BTEC Certificate in Engineering

* BTEC Certificate and Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering (Mechanical)

* City & Guilds Certificate in Engineering

* EAL Certificate and Diploma in Engineering.

* The ability to read engineering drawings

* Good practical and technical skills

* An understanding of the properties of materials

* The ability to work to a high degree of accuracy

* The ability to picture how a finished product will look

Personal Competencies:

* Ability to work within a team as well as on own initiative with Minimal supervision.

* Ability to take instruction and apply to given tasks

* Strong motivation skills.

* Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with people at all levels within the organisation

* Good concentration skills
